Man Dies in Pre-Trial Detention

A man being kept in pre-trial detention on the request of the Prosector General has died.
The man kept in detention has been identified to be Ismail Shabeen (Maafannu Malas). According to reports, Shabeen had been in custody for 3 years.
According to sources within his family, Shabeen had been suffering from major health problems and had plead with the courts, several times, to permit him to seek medical treatment. His requests had been denied.
As Shabeen was not a convicted prisoner, he had been deprived from the privileges and rights that regular prisoners enjoy.
Although the Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem, had previously advocated against the practice, some 300 individuals are currently kept in pre-trial detention.
