Ameen to be Tried at Criminal Court: Supreme Court

The trial of Mohamed Ameen, who is charged with terrorism, will be continued in the Criminal Court, as per the Supreme Court's decision today.
The Criminal Court had rejected Ameen's defence that the stautes of limitations had expired for both charges previously laid against him. Ameen later appealed to the High Court, which overturned the lower court's ruling and deemed the charges void.
The State has appealed Ameen's case to the Supreme Court. The State argues that Ameen had been charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and that they had followed the statutes of limitations laid out in that Act.
The Supreme Court ruled that the High Court had interpreted the law in contradiction to previous Supreme Court rulings. The Court stated that the statutes of limitations laid out in the Prevention of Terrorism Act had been intended to give the Prosecutor General's Office adequate time to investigate and prepare for terrorism cases, wrote Justice Husnu Suood.
The Supreme Court overturned the High Court's ruling and stated that there were no obstacles to continuing Ameen's trial at the Criminal Court.
