Chief of Staff at the President’s Office Ali Zahir has been accused of influencing the justice bench at former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom's trial. However, Ali Zahir refused to swear to deny the allegations against him.
Allegations have been made towards Ali Zahir for influencing the justice benches in the trial of Yameen comes following the leak of an audio recording. Justice Ali Adam claimed that he met Ali Zahir, Chief of Staff at the President’s Office. Ali Zahir allegedly met with him upon Chief Judge Ali Rasheed’s request. He reported that before the verdict was passed, Ali Rasheed was informed he would become a Supreme Court Judge.
Speaking at the news conference that was held yesterday by the criminal court and high court, former high court chief Judge Najeeb had said that he can swear that former Chief judge of the court Ahmed Hailam was contacted by Ali Zahir to order him to push the case of Yameen to be handle in a way he proposes.
During the new conference, Ali Zahir was asked if he can deny the allegations made by Judge Najeeb since judge Najeeb has sworn in front of the Media. Ali Zahir also stressed that he is ready to deny the allegations by taking seven oaths however, he will swear only through the normal principles followed in such matters.
If an accuser can prove with evidence that he had influenced the trial under the principles followed in such matters. After that, the person who is accused and has the evidence against will swear.
