Tourist Arrivals Decline by 45%

Tourists who arrived in the Maldives from 1st January 2021 to 9th February 2021 has declined compared to the same period in 2020.
Figures published by the Tourism Ministry of Maldives shows that 119,501 tourists arrived in the Maldives from 1st January to 9th February 2021. This is a decline of 45.7 percent compared to the same period in 2020 where 220,194 tourists arrived in the Maldives.
Maldivian borders were closed for tourists in March 2020 as many airlines stopped arriving in the Maldives. The borders were reopened in July 2020. Since then tourist arrivals have been increasing gradually. Tourism Ministry's statistics show that 555,494 tourists arrived in the Maldives last year. This is a significant decline compared to 2019.
Even though tourist arrivals are on the decline, Tourism Minister Dr.Mausoom stated that the government expects 1.5 million tourist arrivals this year. In addition, he stated that their estimates show that tourists will spend 10 million bed nights in the Maldives this year.
So far this year, most tourists to the Maldives are from Russia. India, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Romania are also among the top source markets.
