Elderly Maldivian Man Attacked by an Indian at Mosque

An elderly Maldivian man has been attacked by an Indian at a mosque in Hulhumale'.
According to various sources, the Indian man entered the man and strangled the old man. However, he was apprehended by onlookers and was handed over to law enforcement officers.
As usual with crimes involving Indian citizens, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) did not reveal much information about the case. A media official of MPS stated that the Indian man is in police custody but refused to tell whether he was under arrest. MPS claimed that they are looking into the matter.
Crimes committed by Indian nationals are on the rise in the Maldives now. A few weeks ago a Maldivian woman was sexually harassed by an Indian man. However, the woman was silenced by seniors at her workplace and the Indian man was allowed to leave the country.
President Solih's administration issued more than 5000 work visas to Indian nationals last year alone. Authorities often give a blind eye to crimes committed by Indians in the Maldives. In late 2020 an Indian doctor working in the Maldives made insulting statements about Islam and he was also allowed to leave the country.
