Government receives MVR 138 million as penalties

The government has received MVR 138.4 million from several different fines and penalties.
Statistics released by the Ministry of Finance indicate that the government has received MVR 138.4 million between 1st January to 17th December 2020.
The income includes fines from traffic violations and fines related to Covid-19. The government received MVR 225.4 million during the same period of the previous year. The income generated this year has gone down possibly due to Malé region being in a prolonged lockdown due to Covid-19.
The government had estimated that MVR 169.7 million will be received via fines this year. It is estimated that the government will receive the estimated amount of income as a large number of people are being fined for flaunting Covid-19 regulations.
