Ghassan condemns government’s attempt to imprison former Chief of Defence Force

Member of Parliament and opposition PPM’s Vice President Ghassan Maumoon stated that he is concerned over the Anti-Corruption Commission’s decision to recommend that the Prosecutor General’s Office charge former Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam.
Ghassan tweeted that history has proven that the military has always been loyal to the country. Ghassan also stated that being faithful to the vows of defending the constitution is not a political act.
Ghassan was referring to then Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam’s efforts to defend the government following the 1st February 2018 Supreme Court Order. In the aftermath of the events that occurred after the Supreme Court order MDP has threatened to imprison Shiyam.
Ghassan condemned various attempts to imprison former Chief of Defence Force and questioned whether accountability is for a certain group of people.
ACC recommended Shiyam for prosecution over allegations that Shiyam’s father was provided accommodations in an MNDF facility. ACC stated that the action involved corruption and thus recommended charges against Shiyam.
