Member of Parliament for Eydhafushi constituency and minority leader of parliament MP Ahmed Saleem has called on the government not to misuse state funds.
A tweet regarding this by Saleem alleged that the current administration is exploiting the Covid-19 pandemic to encroach on human rights and enforcing discriminatory practices and policies and misusing state funds. His tweet also urged the government to stop these practices.
Reports released by the Auditor General indicates that the Covid-19 related expenditure of the government had included practices that might lead to corruption. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had investigated a case related to the purchase of ventilators needed for the country and concluded that corruption was involved in the transaction. The ACC has charged former Health Minister Abdulla Ameen in relation to this case.
It is also imperative to note that the government has also restricted the fundamental human rights of citizens due to Covid-19.
