Elections Commission’s President Ahmed Shareef has said that the Elections Commission will be announcing the dates for the upcoming local council election only if all candidates are able to campaign for the election.
During an interview given to Sun online, Shareef noted that if the necessary permits for candidates to campaign are not provided before 5th January 2021, then it will not be possible to hold the election. He also stated that it is the responsibility of the Elections Commission to ensure that all candidates have a free fair chance to campaign before the commission announces dates for an election.
Shareef also stated that it is difficult to organize an election during a state of a health emergency. He also noted that the relevant authorities should announce that the election could be held during the health emergency before 5th January 2021 or end the state of a health emergency.
During this interview, Shareef also stated that all candidates should be given a fair and equal opportunity to campaign. He also stated that if this opportunity is not provided, candidates could go to courts to challenge the results of the election.
