The Democrats Decry Elections Commission's Delay Tactics

June 19, 2023, Malé - The Democrats, a political party in Maldives, released a strong statement todaycondemning the Elections Commission for intentionally delaying their party registration process. This condemnation follows a controversial decision during a meeting held by the Commission at 8 pm last night.
Commissioners Ali Nashath and Mohamed Asif voted against granting the permit, effectively causing a tie with ayes from Commission President Fuwad Thowfeek and Vice President Ismail Habeeb. The Democrats allege the dissenting Commissioners failed to provide a legitimate reason for their opposition, particularly given the Commission had previously acknowledged the legitimacy of the membership forms provided.
"The Commissioners’ sudden and unexpected demand for additional checks on our forms are not outlined in any written rules or procedures, and have never been mentioned or implemented for any other party registrations," the statement reads.
The Democrats contend that these actions infringe on the political rights of those who signed to form the party and its supporters. This, they assert, is a direct violation of the Right to Assembly as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Maldives.
These allegations surface at a time when public trust in the Elections Commission is dwindling, according to a recent survey by Transparency Maldives. The study shows trust in the Commission at an all-time low.
The timing of these allegations is also crucial as it comes only three months before the presidential elections. Accusations have been levied against President Ibrahim M. Solih and his administration for manipulating state institutions, including the Elections Commission.
"The Democrats are deeply concerned that President Solih’s actions do not bode well for the chances of truly free and fair elections for the September vote," the statement reads. They call on the president and his ministers to cease any undue pressure on the Commissioners, and urge the Elections Commission to end the deliberate delay in party registration.
